One such ukulele is the Rogue ukulele (which includes a bag, pitch pipes and chord chart for under thirty dollars).

Another good choice of ukulele in the ultra-cheap price bracket is the Mahalo. With them being cheaply made, the quality of them is a little variable. I have two Mahalos, one is great one is awful.

Whenever you spend this little on a ukulele, you're taking a chance. If you can afford it, go for a slightly more expensive but more reliable ukulele such as the Lanikai LU-21.

All their ukuleles are made of solid blackwood. Blackwood is part of the Acacia wood family - the same family as Hawaiian koa. I'm reliably informed that the two woods are almost indistinguishable.

When you're looking at which size to buy for your child, go with a soprano. It's the smallest and makes the most ukulele-like sound.

If you're looking to buy a ukulele for your child, you'll want something fairly cheap, reliable and strongly built. The idea buy is the Makala. This is an inexpensive uke but is still a well made instrument. Laminated means that the ukulele has a thin top of expensive wood (such as koa or mahogany) on top of a much cheaper wood. The fancy top layer is mainly there for show and doesn't have a great deal of influence on the sound - so solid wood ukuleles tend to have a fuller and more characterful sound to them. On the upside, laminated ukuleles are less prone to splitting.

Solid wood ukuleles tend to be more expensive but they are often worth it for the added tone you get from them. They'll also tend to 'mature' in the sound they produce much more than a laminated ukulele.

If you're going for a solid wood ukulele, the classic choice is to go for a solid koa instrument like these:

But there are many options for woods out there with new ones coming along all the time such as zebrawood, lacewood, mango and acacia. All of which are available as a solid wood ukulele.

When you're looking for a solid wood uke, do be careful. If the description doesn't state whether the uke is solid or laminated it's very likely that it's laminated.

The original ukulele makers such as Diaz and Nunes always made their ukuleles from koa. However, over the years koa has been over used and is nowhere near as widely available as it has been. This, added to the increasing desirability of koa ukuleles, has lead to a steep increase in the price of koa ukuleles.

But they do remain the most sought after type of ukulele and with good reason. No other type of ukulele creates quite the same distinctive sound as a Hawaiian koa ukulele.

Kamaka are one of the highest quality ukuleles around. This is evidenced by the fact that Jake Shimabukuro, arguably the best ukulele player in the world, plays one. As well as being one of the finest ukulele makers around, they are also the most venerable. The company was established by Samuel Kamaka in 1916. Kamaka had been apprentice to one of the original ukulele makers, Manuel Nunes, before he set off to establish his own company.

Kamakas cross three main time periods. Early Kamakas tend to be very highly sought after and, as a result, are quite expensive. And the new Kamaka ukuleles are also expensive because of the high specifications they are built to. However, the middle period (the gold and white label period ukuleles) tend to be more affordable.
